Flights to Tenerife from Birmingham: the winter-sun run

Jet2, Ryanair and easyJet fly Birmingham to Tenerife as seat-only bookings, and TUI Airways flies it as part of package holidays. Jet2 runs the most, usually once or twice a day, with Ryanair around daily and easyJet adding to the schedule. The route carried 426,928 passengers to Tenerife South in 2025, the sixth-busiest from the airport, which is a lot of traffic for a four-and-a-half-hour flight and a sign of how central the Canaries are to the Midlands' holiday habit.

That mix of low-cost seats and TUI packages gives you two ways to book: grab a cheap seat and sort your own hotel, or take a bundled package with transfers and ATOL cover. Tenerife is about 1860 miles from Birmingham, the longest of the airport's big Spanish routes, because the Canaries sit out in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa rather than on the Iberian mainland. That puts the flight at around four and a half hours, long enough to want the extra legroom or a meal on the longer end of short-haul.

One quiet bonus: the Canary Islands keep the same time as the UK all year, unlike mainland Spain, which is an hour ahead. There is no clock to reset, so no jet lag and no confusion over transfer times.

At the busy times there are roughly three to four departures a day between the airlines, led by Jet2's once or twice daily service, with Ryanair around daily and easyJet and TUI adding to it. That is heavy frequency for a long-ish leisure route, and it holds up through the winter rather than collapsing after the summer, the way many Mediterranean routes do.

Tenerife's peak is the opposite of the mainland's: demand climbs from November as the UK cools, and Christmas and February half-term are among the busiest weeks of the year. For what is leaving Birmingham on the day, the departures board shows the schedule over the hours ahead; for dates further out, book against each airline's own timetable.

Because it is a longer flight, Tenerife costs a little more than the mainland Costas. Off-peak one-way seats often start around £40, and November is usually the cheapest month. The low-cost catch is the same as ever: the cheapest fares are hand-luggage only, so a cabin bag or a hold bag pushes the price up. Price the whole trip with bags in, not the lead-in seat.

With TUI and Jet2 both selling packages, it is well worth comparing a flight-and-hotel deal against booking the two separately, especially in peak winter weeks when a bundle can work out cheaper and comes with transfers and ATOL protection. The Christmas and February peaks are the expensive weeks, so book those early. Check your baggage allowance before you pay, and pack to the liquids rules to keep security moving.

This is the detail that catches people out. Tenerife has two airports, and your Birmingham flight goes to Tenerife South (TFS), also called Reina Sofia, in the south of the island. The other, Tenerife North (TFN) near Santa Cruz, mostly handles inter-island hops and mainland Spain flights, so it is not where UK holiday flights land. If you are booking a transfer or a hire car, book it to TFS. Birmingham has a single terminal at this end, with bag drop, security and the airport map to point the way.

The good news is that the main resorts sit close to the south airport. Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are all around 15 to 25 minutes away, so transfers are short. If you are heading to Puerto de la Cruz in the north, it is a longer drive of about an hour, but still usually done from the south airport, since that is where the flights arrive. Coaches, transfers and car hire all run from TFS.

• Book your transfer to Tenerife South (TFS). It is the one nearly all UK flights use. Do not book a hire car or transfer to Tenerife North (TFN) by mistake, as it is on the other side of the island.
• Price the trip with bags, not the headline fare. The cheapest Jet2, Ryanair and easyJet seats are hand-luggage only. Add a cabin or hold bag online in advance, where it is far cheaper than at the airport.
• Compare a package against seat-only. For peak winter weeks a TUI or Jet2 package with transfers can beat booking flight and hotel separately, and adds ATOL cover. Check both.
• Book the winter peaks early. Christmas, New Year and February half-term are the busiest, dearest weeks on this route. The earlier you book them, the better the fare.
• Mind your passport dates for Spain. The Canaries are Spanish and in the Schengen area, so your passport must be under 10 years old on the day you enter and valid for at least three months after you leave.
